Burglary, shooting lead to police chase through several counties

GOSPORT — Four people were shot Friday night — including a Cloverdale police officer and an Owen County resident — when an apparent home burglary and shooting led to a high-speed chase through several counties.

Two suspects, a man and a woman, suffered gunshot wounds during authorities' efforts to take them into custody, police said.

The Cloverdale officer, who was shot near the intersection of Ind. 42 and U.S. 231 in Putnam County, was taken to a nearby hospital, according to police. His name and condition were unavailable at press time.

His injuries appeared to be minor, Indiana State Police Cpl. Joe Watts said.

The incident started Friday night at a home just north of Gosport in Owen County. During an apparent burglary, a resident was shot more than once with a high-powered weapon, said Indiana State Police Cpl. Jim Valentine. That shooting victim's name and condition were also not released.

The suspects fled from the Gosport area about 10 p.m. in a stolen sport-utility vehicle, heading north toward Putnam County on U.S. 231,  The Blazer had been stolen from the Gosport residence, police said.

Close to the intersection of 231 and Ind. 42 near Cloverdale, shots were reportedly fired from the suspects' vehicle toward officers pursuing in patrol cars. The Cloverdale officer was shot soon after the chase entered Putnam County.

With police in close pursuit, the suspects continued west on Ind. 42 into Clay County, according to police. Officers from several county sheriff's departments and state police posts aided in the pursuit.

The suspects George Schlapp and Charity Dawn Ellinger were shot and killed in an exchange of gunfire on St Rd 42 2 miles west of Ind 59 in Clay County. Both were wanted for questioning in the murder of Joe Forbes near Blackhawk, Indiana, in Vigo County, on September 2nd. A manhunt had been condtucted for the two suspects in Vigo, Clay, and Owen counties, last week.

No officers were injured in the final shootout.

The suspects were apprehended on Ind. 42 near the Vigo County line, according to the Indiana State Police post in Putnamville.
