Ind. 44 wreck still under investigation
MARTINSVILLE — Morgan County police are still investigating a Saturday morning head-on collision that sent two men to different hospitals.
Barry Cleveland of Spencer was transported by helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he underwent surgery, according to the Morgan County Sheriff's Department. A hospital spokeswoman would not disclose his condition Tuesday night.
Bradley Hardin, 21, of Martinsville, was taken to Morgan Hospital and Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
Cleveland was driving a car east in the 3400 block of Ind. 44 east of Martinsville at 6 a.m. when his vehicle was struck by a pickup truck driven west on the highway by Hardin, said Morgan County sheriff's Detective Sgt. Larry Sanders.
Sanders, who reconstructed the crash, said Hardin crossed the center line as the two approached a hill from opposite directions. Neither applied the brakes when they hit each other head-on, he said.
Sanders said marijuana was found in Hardin's vehicle. Police were awaiting results of testing on a powdery substance found in a pipe that may also be an illegal drug, he said. A sample of Hardin's blood has been sent to an Indiana State Police lab for analysis, Sanders said.
Cleveland was wearing a seat belt in the crash, Sanders said, while Hardin was not.
