State police investigating fatal collision

Herald-Times Report

CLOVERDALE — A Spencer boy remains hospitalized after sustaining injuries from a traffic accident that claimed the life of his mother and injured another boy and an Owensburg man over the weekend.

The boy is in critical condition at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, a nursing supervisor said Sunday.

Police say the two-car collision happened Saturday afternoon when Owensburg resident Jerry F. Sharp, who was driving southbound, crossed the center line and struck Charlene A. Boyles' car, which was headed north on Ind. 231 in Cloverdale.

Indiana State Police said Boyles' two passengers were 12-year-old Boy Scouts. Police have not released their names. The other boy's condition was not available Sunday night.

Police have not determined why Sharp's car crossed the center line. No charges have been filed.

Funeral arrangements for the driver, Charlene A. Boyles, 37, of Spencer, are pending at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Cloverdale.

She suffered massive chest injuries and was pronounced dead Saturday at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

Indiana State Police said Boyles was wearing her seat belt, but the report did not indicate whether the children were wearing safety restraints.

Sharp, 59, of Owensville, was taken to Putnamville Hospital, where he was listed in good condition.
