Spencer man killed in wreck
CARP
A Spencer man was killed in a traffic accident just north of Carp in Owen County Friday night.
John A. South, 58, of Spencer, was pronounced dead at Putnam County Hospital.
South was driving a 1994 Mazda north on U.S. 231 near County Road 850 when he attempted to pass a vehicle, witnesses told police. He apparently lost control of his car and struck an oncoming 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Dirk Peterson. 46 of Ellettsville.
The sheriff's department received several calls about the accident, the first at 9:12 p.m., he said. Owen County Emergency Medical Service, the Owen County Rescue Team, the sheriff's department and the Cloverdale and Wayne-Harrison-Montgomery fire departments responded.
Bystanders performed CPR on South until paramedics arrived. South was transported by ambulance to Putnam County Hospital.
Peterson and his passenger, Jan Peterson, were taken to Bloomington Hospital, where they were treated and released.
The highway was closed for nearly three hours while an Indiana State Police accident reconstructionist examined the scene.
