An Owen County family lost its home in a Monday evening fire caused by a wood-burning stove.

Terri Russ and her two children escaped the house unharmed, but lost all of their possessions in the 7 p.m. fire.

A smoke detector alerted the family that the house was filling with smoke shortly after Russ started the wood stove,
Russ tried to put out the fire herself, but was not successful. She was able to call for help.

When Cloverdale firefighters arrived, Walters said, the fire was well-established in the two-story older home.

Cloverdale sent Engines 75, 77 and 78 to the scene with 20 personnel responding. They assisted the Gosport Fire Department, and were also aided by two tankers from Cataract Fire and two tankers from Owen Valley Fire. Greencastle firefighters covered the Cloverdale station.

One Cloverdale firefighter did receive burns on his hand and shoulder, Walters said, but he was treated at Putnam County Hospital and released.

CTVD firefighters returned to station about midnight Tuesday.

Anyone wanting to help the Russ family can send donations to the Cloverdale Fire Station, 51 W. Market St., Cloverdale, 46120, or Cloverdale Church of the Nazarene, 54 W. Water St., Clover-dale, 46120.
